Last night I went to a book signing and little talk given by Celerie Kemble. She was fantastic, I adore her style and approach to design. Her rooms are so layered, they have so much character. She talked about how she likes to use her clients' 'beloveds'. Things they collect, things that are special to them. I loved that. It's so true, there is so much more to a pretty room than the right drapery fabric and correct scaled sofa. What makes it have personality? Comfort? What makes it interesting? I can't wait to dig through her new book in the car on the way to New Orleans tomorrow!

Decorating Out of Town

I have been working with the sweetest client up in in the Pacific North West...far away from Houston! I just shipped up her drapes and roman shades last week...look at the results! Pretty pretty! I had never made drapes for anyone out of town before...but it was a huge success!

We're moving on to the living room and dining room now..I'll keep you posted!

Happy November! I'm so excited it's November. This whole pregnancy I have kept telling myself, 'just make it till November'. And it's finally here! I have a very busy month; I'm in Courtney & Justin's wedding in a couple of weeks, have that super fun apartment installation, (and a bunch of other fun smaller installations, everyone needs their house fixed up before the holidays!) baby shower, guests in town from Dubai, San Francisco and Colorado, and Thanksgiving! I'm hoping I'll be so busy I won't have time to notice how big I am, how suddenly my maternity clothes are not even fitting, how I can't get my boots on or off by myself, or even think twice when like the 6th person asks me dead seriously if I'm having twins.

How glamorous is this space? I am drooling over it all. I suddenly want my whole house antique brass, marble and white.

It reminds me of BHLND. Yesterday I finally had 5 mins to spare before yoga (yes, I'm still waddling into yoga class..and only because there is another girl still going 4 wks further along than me, she's totally my inspiration...she's promised me that everyone she knows who exercised like us delivers early...I'm holding her to that.) and popped into their one and only Houston flagship store. Only one word: glamorous. I left SO inspired. I drooled over every detail.

White lacquered paneled walls? With those whimsical sconce lights filling this little hallway?

I loved all of the French influences. Plastered walls, huge antique mirrors.

And marble. Tons of marble. Sparkly things look so good on honed marble.

Not only were there antiques, but also mid century pieces too. Sofas, chairs, credenzas. It was such a clever mix. I loved the Oushak rugs thrown around too, it felt so cozy. Each room had a surprise, you kept wanting to explore more.

The 'party' room was pretty fun. That marble table/island was to die for. With those simple stools, perfection.

This little back changing room was my favorite. That orange mohair sofa was gorgeous. They also had some chic chairs upholstered in an olive fabric with a navy blue mohair seat cushion, I loved the contrast.

Every detail is so wonderful! The drapery fabric is this heavy cotton 'lace' that is almost like crochet. It was gorgeous.

If you're in Houston you need to check it out. I would love to be planning my wedding again to use BHLDN as a resource! So many sweet ideas! When I can fit in normal clothes I'll definitely be celebrating by shopping for a party dress there, for no occasion in particular...just because!

JCrew Baby. It's about time.

Mama's pocket book is in trouble. Tbou's drawers are about to fill up.

Babies in stripes are pretty much one of my favorite things. Stripes made and designed New Zealand? Even better! JCrew totally knows what's up heading to NZ to find the cutest organic cotton baby clothes out. This little half cajun - half kiwi mate I'm carrying around is going to be decked out.

Teeny tiny cashmere sweaters? On chubby baby arms? Heaven. I can't get enough. Now what color to choose?!

Off to go pick up my navy paint for the nursery...will post pictures as it progresses!

I'm not sure if our baby will call me mama, mom or mum. Tim calls his mom, 'mum'. I call mine, 'miss mendi'. I'm pretty sure Tim will call me "mum" though when referring to me with baby. I like it, I think it's sweet.

I love love love the purple. I don't know about y'all, but that color is just a bit chicer than the red, yellow or orange ones. I'm hoping these bad boys last in this 85 degree heat we've been having. I picked up mine from a sweet Mexican man off the side of the road somewhere between Shreveport, Louisiana and Houston, Texas. They were about 1/2 the price and prettier than the ones this same size at Whole Foods.

Ellen's Rugs

When I saw Ellen & Portia's house in this month's AD, the first thing I noticed were their rugs. Boy, do they have great rug taste! All antique Oushaks and Perisans, and big ones, the right sizes for these big rooms, so great. I love their home and how cozy it feels, especially how they threw those nice rugs all around their kitchen.

I am one tired girl these days! Work is as crazy as ever, and this past weekend I participated in Urban Market. Thank you to all of you who came out to shop and support! Finally I'm happy to say that Tim and I will not be waking up on Saturdays and Sundays at 3am any more to watch the Rugby World Cup, since New Zealand won the final against France on Sunday morning (our time)! So glad and relieved that is over. I can now get 10 more weeks of full night sleeps until Baby Lonergan arrives!

HGTV just came out with a new magazine, this month was its first issue. Have y'all picked one up yet? You should, there are some good ideas in there to take note of. I was pleasantly surprised and excited to see my easy, fast and cheap suggestion right under the Mr. Berkus! Just a simple way you can make your home happier!

I'm sorry I've been so swamped. I was out of town for most of last week and this week I'm playing catch up. With finishing up all of these projects and the holidays right around the corner, I don't think I'll be able to stop for one second before this baby arrives!

Hi Friends. Sorry for being so MIA. I've been swamped. I'm working on a very fun project that has a very short deadline...it's a full on renovation and fully furnished apartment. Although it's been fast and furious it's been such a joy and I'm absolutely obsessed with everything we're doing!

(not to mention my client has been in town for one meeting and since we met has been in about 5 countries...we'll meet again at the install, she's been such a trooper trusting me through this process! the best part about working with a non stop world traveler is that they are always emailing back no matter what time of night since you're covering all timezones!)

This Hermes Scarf arrived today, being framed over the guest bed. That's the dust skirt fabric on top.

And THESE. These incredible Swedish trunks. They were used to transport stocks and other important documents. There was a pair. They are so fine. They make the coolest/best looking/most perfect bedside tables ever. Thank you Round Top.

So that is a little taste of what's happening in that guest room. Wouldn't you want to stay there? I have a key. I think Tbou and I might have to move in.

Speaking of taste. Did yall see/try to make that pumpkin bread on Erika's blog? She discovered it here. I took her advice, no glaze and spice cake mix, but I added walnuts. I like a little crunch. I made three loaves, one for me, two for friends. Within two hours of delivering my friends little sweet treats, they were both wanting the recipe. I kept telling them, (and myself) it's 'healthy', it's 'healthy, being only 3 1/2 ingredients (one being a vegetable and one being a nut!) and no eggs or oil added to the mix. My friend Molly kindly reminded me there is also in fact a whole box of cake mix. Cake mix. Not bread mix. Wups. But still, it could be worse. Tim came home and was a little unsure of how I possibly had time to make three loaves of pumpkin bread with the amount of work I've had on in the past couple weeks. He questions my time management sometimes, rightfully so I guess. The answer is a 7 month pregnant girl will make time for any type of spice treat in October, especially one that has less than 3 ingredients. I had to do something to celebrate this glorious-freezing-81 degree-fall weather! Anyway, try it, you won't be disappointed. It's healthy, don't worry. Pumpkin practically has 0 calories.

Moving on. Check out these hot hot monogrammed shams we just did for Miss Mendi's bed! Those are King Shams. Big ones. The monogram is like 13''wide. And don't they look pretty?

Oh and we haven't forgotten about Tbou! Look what my friend Miss Sally Wheat spied for us at Round Top!

So cute. I can't wait for some chubby legs to be dangling out of there, covered in carrots! Tim asked me if it was safe. I'm sure it will be just fine, at least it looks good and isn't plastic!

Lastly, my book club is reading this. It's very funny. And is a nice change from the baby books and design business books I've been reading before bed. Pick yourself up a copy for a good laugh. I'm off to finish it now....

Navy Nursery

After going to Leslie Sinclair's book signing at Boxwood last week I haven't been able to stop thinking about maybe painting Tbou's nursery Navy Blue. Boxwood throws good parties. And they always 'dress' the shop to the nines for them. One of the walls/vignettes they changed for the party included a wall painted in Farrow & Ball's "Black Blue". It was to die for. I've become obsessed and I can't stop thinking about it. I need it in my house. Then I thought, ooo, maybe I could paint the nursery that color. But is that too goth for a little baby? Even with lots of gold/mirror and white? Or maybe it will promote lots of sleeping being so dark? Ahh. Decisions Decisions. Maybe I should just keep that one in my back pocket for our next house? What do y'all think?

When we were kids my mom used to let us make 'pallets' as a fun treat when having a sleepover or as a form of entertainment on a Friday night. You know, big piles of messy blankets and pillows in the middle of the living room floor to watch a movie, that kind of pallet.

When I saw this ever-so-charming nursery, I couldn't help but smile at that great pallet. This mom had such a great idea for her child, what little one wouldn't love to curl up on the floor in a special little spot like this?

I will definitely be implementing something like this in the future for our little ones! Not only is it darling, it encourages quiet time and reading. My favorite part is that it feels so multi-cultural...even sparks my grown up imagination of camping out in a far away Arabian desert!

I need to get out from under the rock I must have been hiding under all summer because holy moly, how on EARTH did I miss Lulu DeKwiatkowski's One Kings Lane sale of her interiors drawings. I'm seriously dying I missed this. I would have wanted all of them. They are so utterly charming I can't even stand it. This is the one that kills me. I LOVE IT. The colors are so my favorite colors. Sad face. I love that Chinese looking black chair and the little bit of 'colonial' feel it has.

And this is my favorite Lulu DK fabric, 'Colors'. I've been DYING to use it on a project. Let me know if you need pillows out of it! I might just be ordering some to have it at my finger tips!

I don't know about y'all but sometimes I just get overwhelmed with the flash sale sites - every.single.day. It's like I deal with so much shopping/sourcing as it is on a daily basis that those sales on top of it all just puts me over the edge with consumerism. So I need to take breaks from them. But lesson learned...pay attention Meg, because breaks may mean major missed opportunities! Shucks! Good thing Miss Lu is still offering to custom draw for her fans! I might be taking her up on that ;)

If Money Were No Object - Nursery Pt 1

Ok, to be honest. As a designer, designing your own nursery is hard work. It took me a while to even want to start thinking about it (maybe the tiredness & sickness had something to do with it!). I'm not really into 'baby', themes or pale pink or pale blue or anything that looks cheesy. I like furniture to last, to have a timeless feel. Once I saw the photo above, it all sorta 'clicked' in my mind. That soft mint/pistachio is so beautiful and soothing, it's classy and looks good with lots of other colors. I've put together below, items I would purchase for my 'dream nursery' if there was absolutely no budget. Well, Tbou is going to have to attend college one day, therefore most of these exact items are merely a dream (especially that light fixture!). I've already collected some things inspired off of these images and will show you piece by piece later on as it comes together.

Y'all know I'm obsessed with rugs. Real, hand knotted, semi-antique Persians to be exact. This is a rug I've stalked at my FAVORITE for a long time. The colors are hard to see here but the base color is this amazing deep eggplant. It's so unusual. I would layer it over my wall to wall seagrass. It's a Karabagh, my friend/old colleague Jenifer from my college years was the first to introduce me to the beauty of Russian/Caucus Karabaghs! Ceiling done in this classic O&L paper I've loved for years

Of course I'd need a side table thrown in, lamps, some of those Senegalese baskets as hampers, maybe a bookshelf or wall shelf. You get the gist. And a very big closet to neatly put away all of the toys...wooden toys!

A Tale of Tbou and Sunken Cypress

Thanks for all the well wishes y'all! Ok, ok now you're wondering how on earth this baby got a name like Tbou? Well. I'll explain, slowly. We're originally from South Louisiana, where a lot of Cajun French is thrown around in everyday speech. One particular phrase often used is calling someone 'T-xxx' as a nickname. For example, John Sr. has a little boy, names him John Jr, John Jr would then be "T-John", meaning 'Little John'. This all derives from the French word for little, which is 'petite'..then shortened to just plain 'T'. Ok, now that you know that you'll understand how Tbou was named. When I went out on my own full time with LeSueur Interiors about 18 months ago, I was so busy and in over my head with work that I found little time for exercise. Consequently I gained 11 lbs. The 'Texas 11' I was calling it, moving to Texas is bad for the waist line! Right around this time we went to my cousins wedding in Alabama, and I brought a pencil skirt to wear. I hadn't tried it on in quite a few months and it was snuuug, very very snug, spanx allowed for the zipper to go up, but that was about it. It was so tight that when I tried to get in the backseat of my mom's, Miss Mendi, 2-door Audi I couldn't squeeze. I had to make her sit in the back so I could sit in the front. While I was crouched down low in a very comfortable position trying to contort my body in spanx, a skin tight linen skirt and 4'' heels I could hear my Dad yell, 'Well come on 'Boudin'! Boudin is a sausage from South Louisiana made with pork and spicy cajun rice. (side note - if you're ever around Scott/Lafayette in Louisiana, you have to stop here for the Boudin balls, they are to do die for) There I was, looking and feeling like absolute 'boudin' in that outfit! Then he said, "I can't believe your poor mother is in the back seat." I felt awful! The only thing that could remedy the situation was booze. So one of the only pictures of us from that night is above, taken of me and my sis Kate, at probably 2 or 3am where wine, vodka and the afterparty really loosend up that skirt. Thank goodness you can't even see the skirt! (one side note on Kate's pretty silk dress in the foreground, she got that when visiting me in Paris in '05, she was a junior or senior in highschool! still fits! always hold on to your 'classics'! lesson: wear your silk-cut-on-the-bias as much as you can when you're young, before you gain the texas 11!)

Ever since then my Dad has ever so lovingly and affectionately teased me by calling me 'Boudin' (Pronounced : Boo - Dan) Naturally, when we told him we were expecting, he said, "awww...little Boudin.....TBoudin..... TBOU!!!" and Tbou was born. Lucky for us we don't live in South Louisiana and once Tbou is born, the nickname will die and its real name will take over. For those in South Louisiana...the nicknames never die.

This is our camp. I've talked about it before. It's a very very special place to our family. When we moved around and lived overseas, it's the 'home' we always came back to. All of our friends would congregate here in the summers with us. A lot of memories have been made in this little log cabin on the water.

Earlier this year our camp went under some renovations. The guy my Dad hired to do/manage the work is named Tom, or 'Tattoo Tom' as Miss Mendi calls him. Anyway, Tom's right hand man is called, 'Midnight'. My Dad has been living away from the bayou since 1980 so he forgets people from time to time. When he asked someone to remind him who 'Midnight' was, they replied, 'You know, remember his brothers 'Moon' and 'Sunshine'?'. This is no joke. This is real life on Lake Verret, Louisiana!

One time during this whole renovation process, Dad lost Midnight's phone number and asked Mom to look it up in the phone book. Miss Mendi remembered his real name, Francis Richard (richard is pronounced ree-chard down here), and called directory assistance. Unfortunately there was no Francis Richard listed. Dad told her to call back and ask them to look under 'Midnight' Richard, sure enough, his number was listed. Moral of the story, nick names are very important, hence why the name 'Tbou' even exists!

Down here people live like they did in the good ole days, and a lot of bartering/gift exchanging still takes place. Tom was so grateful that my Dad hired him for this job that when he ran into an old log on the bottom of the lake a few months later, Dad was the first person he called. Turns out Tattoo Tom had hit a piece of 'sunken cypress'. Over 100 years ago, when the cypress trees were being logged in the area, logs would fall off the barges from time to time as they traveled across the water. These logs are considered to be very valuable because they've been soaking in water for a very long time, and the wood is absolutely beautiful. When Tom offered the wood to Dad, we all completely freaked out and started thinking of a million ways to use it, fire place mantles, kitchen cabinets, FURNITURE!

Anyway Dad had the wood all cut and planed and is holding on to it for when my parents build their dream house in a couple of years. But he kindly offered Tbou a few pieces of it so my GrandTex or GreatGrandTex to Tbou, could make a little cradle! He's going to make one similar to the one above. Sweet huh?

Part of the reason this heat is bothering me so much and I've been so distracted lately.... I have a BABY on board, and I've been rapidly expanding into a hippo! Tim and I, along with our families, are so thrilled about this new adventure! My family has nick-named this sweet peanut, "T-bou" (long story for another time) and we are absolutely thrilled that our family will expand to 3 at the end of the year! (isn't that sign above cute? My brother Lon saw one like it in France this summer and sent me a picture!) There's Tbou at age 13 weeks. He/She is 21 wks now, over half way there!

I hope Tbou is as cute as these munchkins. I love pandabears. Love them. I think it's the black and white. And their sweet eyes. Anyway, one of the first little things I bought for Tbou was this little onesie with Pandas embroidered out of French Knots. It's precious. I'm a sucker for fabric and embroidery.

Anyway, now that this cat Tbou is out of the bag, I guess you'll be asking about nursery designs?! Right? I was frozen there for a while, so tied up and busy with clients, I could hardly even think of what to do for the baby's room. Now I've started ordering/buying a few things...I'll show you my inspiration later this week! We aren't finding out if Tbou is a girl or boy until birth so it's been making the nursery fun and challenging!

I hate to be one of those people that's always blogging about how they can't wait for the next season to come. Really, for the most part, I try to enjoy the time I'm in. But I'm sorry, this summer is an exception. I can hardly stand another day over 100 degrees. My yard is burnt up to a crisp, everyone is grumpy from this heat and the mosquitos have taken over. It's so miserable. And there is no end in sight. My car said 106 today. 106. Please, September, October..can you please hurry up?

Expensive but worth it. Even Tim was squealing in the shower when he used that peppermint shampoo for the first time, it tingles!

This bra is the best thing ever. Perfect when you're little on top like me! I have it in two colors, I would wear them all!This Madewell Teeshirt. This color is really like a neon pink in real life. Tim observed last night that I'm "totally into 80's colors" lately. Duh. If he read my blog he'd know that already!I plan on wearing it like this in the fall. Casual.

Hempseeds. Very high in protein. Recommended by the healthiest person I know, my mother- in-law. Sprinkled over granola and fruit and fage in the morning!

Coconut Water. Also recommended by my mother-in-law (by way of her acupuncturist). At first I was forcing them down, couldn't really stand the taste, now I've become addicted. We've been ordering cases off of Amazon (free shipping with Prime and it's like 1/3rd cheaper than Whole Foods!)

Hollywood Regency Tub Chairs

When I don't know what to blog about I start scrolling through my iphone pictures to see what I've been doing lately. It's 'chocka' (a term often used by people of my husbands native land down under) full of inspiration. These Hollywood-regency beauties are the best things I've seen in a while. I love their round shape, fat channeled back and tubby-ness. They are on a round wooden base which is great looking. Of course this is the original mid-century upholstery that needs to be ripped off, but imagine the possibilities. VELVET. Dark and sexy jewel tones! Mmm. These are so wonderful and would add so much life and character to a room instead of boring old regular chairs. Lesson of today, keep your eyes peeled for furniture that isn't so 'typical'. With a little imagination there is so much potential in unusual shapes.

I'm not going anywhere this weekend! Yay! We've been out of town every weekend since sometime in June and I'm tired of these weekends away. I've really been wanting to get some of these African baskets and have been stalking them online, unable to decide which ones to get. Forget plastic laundry baskets from now on! These are perfect for collecting laundry, toys, towels etc.

Inspiration Starts With One Thing

I'm working on a new project. My clients are wanting to transform a dining room that is never used into more of a sitting room, an area they can lounge in, like a secondary living room. I hadn't moved forward in the design process until last week. It started with a little ladies lunch with my Mom, sister, Aunt, cousin and her cute kids. Afterwards Miss Mendi and I wasted, I mean, worked, for a few hours, popping into a few antique/vintage shops. That's when I came across this great old sofa. The scale and design are perfect, character hard to find in new pieces. That single seat cushion is fabulous and it's deep and comfortable. Of course it needs to be reupholstered and re-worked a little. I can imagine a geometric fabric, (perhaps inspired by the original..not that color though!).

Then I spied these wing chairs at another shop. The stretchers sold me. They aren't terribly old, but they can totally be spiced up with a great fabric, maybe an over scaled stripe or something colorful, unexpected.

Now I'm thinking we need to grasscloth the entire room, add texture everywhere! It's warm and inviting and will modernize these older pieces of furniture.

And coffee table? Something modern...lucite/mirror/glass. Something that looks really pretty when you set a drink on it!

Summer Time Accessorizing

...Is all about bracelets. When I was a kid, my sister and I were crazy for making friendship bracelets, I miss them. I love piling on any type of bracelet, practically all the way to my elbow and this summer has been no exception. I LOVE Karen's new friendship bracelet...I want to make one. I know, I know, is that bad? Not for a friend..for myself? Ok fine, if I found time to make them I'd have to make one for my sis Kate too.

This was my wrist yesterday. Fauxlex mens watch off a cheapo website, South American woven bracelets from Madewell NYC, kinda like these, fakey gold bangles from a market in Mumbai, all time favorite tortoiseshell bracelets from Chatuchak Bangkok (I've had six of them since 1999, now I'm down to 2..so sad), string bracelets from San Francisco H&M last weekend, love the hodge podge.

How can this translate to your house? Your books are kinda like your bracelets. Mix and match them. Colorful, old and new, maybe on boring subjects or exotic lands. Change them up. Decorate with them. Buy them even if you hate the subject but the cover is pretty. This is how the books are laying around here this week. They are always a changing!
I love summer! We're off this afternoon up north to Saugatuck, MI for a special wedding! So excited to get out of town, hang with old friends and feel some slightly cooler temperatures!

Ok y'all, anyone in the market for a gorgeous Suzani, straight from Tajikistan? I have a buddy from high school, who had been living in Tajik for a few years and hooked me up with these amazing antique and semi-antique suszani's! Doesn't get more authentic than that! They are at my booth at MAI, but I thought for those of you out of town, you might want to see them too! Let me tell you a little about each one...

This one is, 'Big Red'. Antique, over 100 yrs old. Size: 4'5'' x 6'9''. Email me for pricing. These iphone photos don't do this a justice. The stitching is amazing and the colors are beautiful.

All of these would be perfect made into ottomans or just lying on the end of a bed.

This one is my favorite...my absolute favorite. The colors are SO unusual, and this would totally make a room. This one is also an antique, older than 100 yrs.

Better Homes & Gardens Shoot

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Better Homes & Gardens magazine on a photo shoot at our home! It was honestly a dream come true and I feel so fortunate to have had this experience early in my career. I had every intention of shooting little mini videos and interviews of everything happening, but of course it was crazy all day and I never really got there. But next shoot I'll make sure to make time for videos! I thought y'all might like to see some of the 'behind the scenes'! You have to make a huge mess to get some pretty pictures! Before we styled or got to the living room

Photography equipment was everywhere, it was SO high tech, I was so impressed with the gear!

The ever-so-sweet and talented Kim Cornelison working her magic. You will probably remember Kim's work from seeing her amazing condo here. Who could forget her precious Tibetan Terrier Walter?!

It hadn't rained in Houston in like 195 days or something insane like that, of course the day of the shoot it poured. There was a lot of amazing faux sun going on in that hallway later on!

Suddenly our bedroom and bedside tables became the catch-all for extra lamps, flowers, chairs etc. You would not believe the stuff I have in this house. I should offer everything up in my attic for sale one day.

Kim's husband and partner Alfie and super cool LA based stylist Char fixin' up the front porch. I couldn't help out there in that 100% humidity otherwise my already flat hair would have even been worse!

It finally stopped raining for about 30 minutes so we could get our front porch shot! Tim and I sat on the front steps and drank a beer while they set up!

I'll make sure to let y'all know when the issue runs. It was SO much fun working on this shoot, and I hope to get to do it again soon! Not to mention it was the best excuse to totally finish and fix up my own house! Thanks a million to Susan Fox, Char Hatch Langos, Kim Cornelison, Alfie Ferreyra, Amy Panos and of course Better Homes & Gardens!

Deep Sea Fishing

One of the most fun days I've had in years was a few months back when we were in the Coromandel, New Zealand. Tim and I chartered a boat along with my parents and we went deep sea fishing for the day. I had never fished in the open ocean before, it was a blast! The colors were so inspiring I am still dreaming of them and just had to show you all these photos. The turquoises, blues, oranges, and greens. That seaweed! And of course the colors of the fish were beautiful too. If you ever get a chance to do something like this on a holiday, I highly recommend it!

La Residence - South Africa

My good friend Kristin just got back from a little holiday down in South Africa. We talked as soon as she returned home to 'debrief' about the baby lions and baby cheetahs she saw (she told the guides she'd pay extra to babies)! Anyway, all she could talk about was this amazing hotel she stayed at and how much I would have loved the interiors. I trust Kristin. She was born and raised in Vail. Not many people actually come from Vail, Colorado. Sure they vacation there, but to be raised there, that is special. Anyway, I couldn't wait to dig through the website and check this place out. Feast your eyes on La Residence, which is in the wine country just 45 minutes from Cape Town. Absolutely gorgeous. Kristin's buddy Laura set the trip up, she works for this super cool boutique travel agency and can hook you up with awesome places like this one! Follow Laura on Twitter, she is always in-the-travel-know! I love how it's rustic but fancy at the same time, my type of holiday!

Happenings This Week.

Lighting changes everything: We're ordering these pendants for a client's kitchen. Wowza. Been DYING to use them.

Watermelon and papaya. Hint - squirt lime juice on your papaya, it's amazing. It's as hot as the tropics around here, so I've been eating tropical fruit like I live on an island.

I'm really trying to convince a Doctor's office I'm working on to step out side of the box and put some modern, abstract (and cheerful I might add) art in their waiting room. Michelle Armas.

When Tim and I were in London at the end of 2008, we had been traveling for the previous 5 months. As a result, we were out.of.money. We went to the Tate but didn't pay the extra 18 or 23 or whatever amount of pounds it was to see the Rothko exhibit. I will forever regret that. I saw this book at Anthropologie this week and couldn't resist.

My Dad is taking me to a baseball game tonight while Tim takes an economics midterm. He called me on Wednesday to invite me, just so excited! Apparently tonight at the ballpark is 'Sunday Day', and there is some kind of free ice cream with our killer seats behind home plate. Dad is very fired up over this! Somehow Dads can always make you feel like a little girl!

Global Slackers

Check out this video. I guarantee a smile on your face for the entire four minutes. I went to high school with (and participated on Student Council...hahaha) super woman Megan Root, who is on the adventure of a lifetime. Megan, her boyfriend and a bunch of other people along they way have driven a jeep from southern China to the tip of South Africa, stopping in just about every country along the way. It just reminds me, if you're fortunate enough to be able to travel - do it. There is no education better than travel. My high school has produced some pretty cool people, remember Junia and Mike, and I can't forget this wild bunch?

Colin Foggo's Kaiteriteri Bach

First thing's first. In order to understand some of the information in this post you need to understand the geography of New Zealand. I have highlighted in RED the places we frequently visit, have lived and are mentioned below. It's important to get a lay of the land. I have had these images scanned since I returned back from New Zealand in (gasp) March, and am just now finally showing them to you all. When we were there my mother-in-law called me from Wellington (Tim is from Wellington, but at the time we were up north, remember?) and said, "Have you picked up this month's New Zealand Home and Garden yet? And have you seen who's on the cover?". We were in the car driving down to Napier and I made Tim pull over to the first BP station we could find. Low and behold, there was Colin's bach right on the cover.

I worked for Colin Foggo at Belle Interiors when we lived in Christchurch. He totally gave me a chance and hired me when I had no design experience and I was very young. I remember when he asked how old I was I replied, "23 - almost 24", haha, that makes me laugh thinking about it. I was bright eyed and very eager to learn anything and everything Colin had to teach me. I can remember he'd give me lessons some slow afternoons about the durability of various fabrics. Explaining the difference between an 'ottoman weave' and a 'jacquard'. These important things designers need to know on a daily basis that aren't really taught in school. During the time I worked for him, Colin was building this 'bach' (pronounced 'batch'). A typical Kiwi bach is usually a small house that you build yourself on land you don't own, near a beach. Often times, as in the case of my sister-in-laws family's bach, there is no running water or electricity and a 'long drop'. New Zealanders spend their all of their holidays at their bachs. But Colin's "bach" is not your average bach.

The location of this bach, near Nelson in Kaiteriteri has been 'the beach' that most of the people from Christchurch vacation at during the summer. Tim and I went there for Waitangi Day one year and camped out! It was one of our best trips ever! It's very isolated, most people spend their time there hiking in the Abel Tasman National Park, kayaking, and of course boating. I remember seeing people grill fresh scallops they caught that afternoon at our campsite!Along the front of the house, overlooking the ocean, there are 11 meters (that is roughly 33 ft) of sliding glass doors that open all the way up and hide back into a wall, opening up the entire kitchen, dining and living room to the outside. Pretty brilliant. Did you check out that ceiling? It totally warms up the modern architecture. All of this furniture Colin designs and manufactures himself through Belle Interiors (with the exception of that great striped B&B Italia sofa). Cameron, Colin's son (pictured above) is an artist and designed that black cabinet and drew that piece of art to the right of it. That coffee table and the side tables are from Bali because I remember when that awesome shipment of furniture came in.

I adore that Serralunga pot on Colin's deck. Colin and his wife Marj used it as a massive ice bucket their first New Years Eve at the house. Isn't that great? Remember New Years is the height of summer in New Zealand!I was just so glad to see Colin's amazing bach published after working along side him and witnessing his design process through that project. Colin is completely self taught and self trained and has successfully run a serious design studio for over 30 years, which is something I admire so much. His impeccable style and his successful business has taught me a very important lesson. Personal style, good taste and an eye for design are things that can't be taught or learned in a classroom. It's that part of design that the greats can 'see' and 'understand' instinctively. I never worked a day with Colin when he wasn't dressed in an Armani suit jacket (even on Saturdays, he stuck a (presumably) Prada t-shirt underneath!)

Colin was constantly teaching me how to have confidence when working with clients, leading them down the design path, which for us in the business seem to automatically 'get' but the hard part is convincing and relaying those intuitions to our clients. I wish I could pop over to New Zealand for monthly mentoring sessions with you Colin! Last May when I was in New Zealand I popped over to Belle on a Friday evening and we had wine and cheese in the gorgeous showroom, it was so fun catching up. I can't wait to see what Colin does with the new space they will be moving in (they were affected by the Christchurch earthquake TWICE) and I'll see you on my next trip down!

Pps. For some reason I've been very homesick for beautiful scenery lately. The two places I lived before Houston were Boulder, Colorado and New Zealand. I know, I'm one lucky girl. Good Design Is Everywhere

This is pretty dorky, and a shows how I can be a little design OCD, but I have to share with you our new vacuum cleaner. Miele. I love this brand. So well designed. Their logo is: forever better. I love that. In my industry I spend so much time perfecting the design of the furnishings/accessories etc, why not also make sure the appliances I use also are well designed? It's not just about how your home appears, it's about living a well designed life.

Line Your Drawers

Not your 'drawls'. But your drawers. Y'all know about 'drawls' right? Down south underpants are often called 'drawers' and with a Cajun accent like my father's, they sound like 'drawls'. My mom always tells this hilarious story about how after her lingerie shower before her wedding, my Dad had to ask where she had gotten all of those 'ventilated drawls' from!!

Anyway. Lets get back on track. I've been wanting to upholster inside of the drawers of my chests for the longest time. To me, that is like the ultimate luxury, to have soft clean padded interiors of my drawers. But I have put it off, and put it off. So today I got antsy and measured all of the insides of all of my drawers and ordered pretty (scent-free) paper to line them with. Available at Chic Shelf Paper here.

I ordered the charcoal stripe for the drawers of my entry piece. Yes, I'm keepin it real showing you what a mess it is around here! Those mint julep cups are out to remind myself to take them to get monogrammed!

Then I ordered the beige damask for my bedroom chests. I have two of these, they aren't an exact pair, both French antique Louis Phillipe chests on either side of our bed. I obviously didn't style this, you can see how many magazines I'm behind on! My bedroom is just about finished, and I'll leave that big reveal for later because in a few weeks our house is being photographed for a national magazine! Very exciting and I'll update you more on that later!

The Simple Life

Everything moves so fast. I hardly can keep up. I just realized I never shared some of our trip to New Zealand with you (we were there in March). We stayed for a few days up in the Coromandel before Tim's brother got married in the wine country of Napier. Highly highly recommended. The Coromandel is where the locals vacation in NZ. The normal tourists are no where to be found. We stayed up at this amazing hotel about 10 minutes from the coast in the mountains. This little cottage was along the drive. How sweet is it? Check out the garden. Makes you want to live this simple life doesn't it?

And to top it off, this view is 15 minutes down the road!

Urban Market wore me out! I'm still recovering! For those of you locally, thank you so much for coming by and supporting me! This week, my new assistant Blair and I are on an organizational war path! I was so behind the last couple of months with traveling, so it feels great to get my feet grounded and get everything in order. We have some big installations and photo shoots starting next week that go all the way through the end of June! Right now, these beaches, colors and cocktails are looking very appealing. Anyway, we ended up going to Shreveport to see my grandparents for Mothers Day, and just had the best time. It was all naps and eating. Lots of eating - Pound Cake. I just about ate a whole pound cake by myself. So.Good. Grandmother deviated from her normal recipe and tried out the Peace Meals recipe, highly recommended. We also listened to birds. Here is where I really need to tell you about my grandparents and how awesome they are. They are so young and cool. Grandmother is always home making, home baking, home remedying something, and it's always better than you can buy anywhere. Also she has been known to be the instigator of mixing up Bloody's (as in Mary's) early in the morning when at our camp. Yep, not the granddaughters in their 20's, but Grandmother getting her drink on. She fishes better with a little somethin' to sip on anyway. GrandTex is 80 going on 18 and wears sneakers that are look cooler than what any college kid wears. He can build a house with his bare hands. And he's absolutely hilarious. All of our friends adore him.

Ok. Back to listening to the birds. GrandTex has a had a little trouble hearing lately, and he had been missing his classic one liners cause he couldn't hear much of the conversation. Well, hearing aids are expensive and he didn't want to fork over thousands just to lose them when he was mowing the grass or climbing on the roof. Or for them to stick out of his ears and make him look like any old grandfather who can't hear. I don't blame him, they seemed lame.

THEN...two days before we got to town, Tim found these really cool, inexpensive, rock star hearing aids on Amazon and ordered them straight to Grandmother & GrandTex's house. Those aids are invisible, you can't see them at all. GrandTex could suddenly hear EVERYTHING and told us to stop talking about him...winkwink. AND best of all, he could start hearing all of those birds off his back porch chirp again. We were all so happy for him and so thankful for Tim for researching and ordering them, talk about improving your quality of life. Grandmother had us laughing because she told GrandTex now she's only ever going to repeat things twice, and that's it, if he misses it, he misses it. Bless her heart! I just had to pass on this information for anyone who might be in a similar situation as this. I told a client of mine about our weekend today and about how excited we were for GrandTex and she asked me to send her the information so she could order them for her Dad. So. Moral of the story. Everyone had a great Mothers Day because GrandTex could hear us! Buy your hearing aids here!!!

Ok if you are not in the market for hearing aids and just read through all of this rambling, but think you might be in the market for some very cool botanicals..keep reading. Of course I can't go anywhere without popping into some little shop somewhere. And Shreveport was no exception. Mom and I skipped over to an antique shop and I picked up these great botanicals for a client. I love how they are horizontal, you hardly ever find them 'landscape'. This set is sold to a client, but the dealer mentioned she had four more in Tennessee, so I had her Fed Ex them to me just in time for Urban Market this weekend! If I was on the ball I'd have tons of 'sneak peeks' for you, but I'm not, so this is the only sneak peek you're going to get! Come see the rest of my goodies this weekend at Urban Market! I had a fun time in Vegas with Jessica! It was my first time to Vegas, so I was a little overwhelmed. We learned a lot about making draperies, selling draperies, and met a lot of gung-ho drapery making ladies. They nearly fell out when we told them we didn't actually do our own sewing, next year I think we need to bring our seamstress Miss Hilda so we have some street cred! We had a fun dinner with these two lovely ladies Megan & Erika. Blogging hall-of-famers. They are so hilarious, I had a great time seeing Erika again, and meeting Megan in 'real life'. They were on a panel at the KBIS show which we attended too. Moral of the panel: blogging helps your business, and stay true to your voice when blogging. Thanks girls, it was a blast!
Ok, then I went to Arizona and laid by the pool with these girls (minus 2 not in this pic) for three days. We had dinner at Trader Vics which is always so fun and brings me back to my days in highschool in Singapore, we used to go there for happy hour all the time. We went to Nordstroms 'Last Chance', it's a total crazy place for crazy people. The girls talked me out of getting this bag. Hum...still thinking about it! We pulled an all nighter watching the Royal Wedding, and we killed a Costco size bottle of Grey Goose in the first day. Do you know how big those are? Mixed with Grapefruit juice, it disappears so fast. Yikes. But we laughed until we cried. It was good for my soul (not my waistline)!
Now I'm back to the grind and very very behind. Yesterday I spent most of my day placing orders for furniture. For one project, I ordered a pale blue linen English arm sofa coupled with a peacock blue velvet Chesterfield sofa. Going in the same living room. The colors remind me of this Charleston house above!

My pal Leslie from Again and Again has this vintage Chesterfield that has the most perfect scale. We're using it as a model to customize our Chesterfield.

In other news, made progress on the assistant front! More news about that to come later. Traveling all week, for work and for fun. Looking forward to catching up with blogging pals and college pals. I most likely won't be blogging the rest of the week. I have to hardcore learn Tuesday-Thursday about making draperies. I promised Jessica I'd take notes. Then starting at 4am on Friday I'll be addicted to the Royal Wedding until they cease footage, (and if this country shows the Royal Wedding like they show the Olympics, we're all completely screwed...hear that NBC? you STINK at major event coverage). The rest of the weekend is major major tons of wine, poolside, blue skies, the coolest CU alumni girls ever, bachelorette fun, discussing every celeb life we can think of, and laughing galore. Spring Break 2011. I can't wait. Then it ends with touring my pal Sally's house in West U in Houston, y'all should check it out, her house is fab and totally worth seeing in person!

ps. Coolidge said no, he just likes doing it for fun and wants to remain anonymous. But I'm going to email him again, and tell him he can wear a ski mask when he comes over. Maybe just maybe he'll change his mind.

OK, here's the deal. About six months ago Tim and I watched, Exit Through The Gift Shop. Super cool film. We were obsessed, and SO entertained. We are still unsure if Banksy created the film or not, (probably), watch it and let me know what you think. Anyway, as a result we started paying attention to street art. And for those of you that think it's tacky and bad, stop reading now and check back in tomorrow, because I'm a huge fan. I feel like my parents generation and grandparents generation can't get on board and don't 'get' it, but like I said, I totally dig it.

Anyway all around town (more downtownish) I have been seeing these great little pieces that totally make me smile. I feel special when I see them because I feel like I am the only one who knows where they are and that they are there. Then I found out my best buddy and drapery workroom rockstar/partner Jessica knows about them too and we've seen a few new ones together! We started telling each other where different ones were and snapping pics when we'd find a newer one. This is why I love my part of town, it's urban, a little bit cool and edgy for ole Houston.

ANYWAY. While Tim was in Brazil last week, I discovered the flamingos! How have I missed these flamingos?! I run/bike by them all the time! OH man! I was so fired up. The penguins were my favorite until I found that pair of sassy sassy flamingos. Sometimes Tim has the.best.ideas. I don't give him enough creative credit because he's the engineer and I'm supposed to be the creative one. BUT, in this case, Tim came up with a super cool idea. He's like, "Meg, let's find that guy and commission him to do a piece in our house on one of our white walls." Brilliant. I already emailed Coolidge. I have the wall ready. What do you think? I'm praying 'C' is super cool and more accessible that Mr. Banksy who is kinda impossible (watch the movie, you'll get what I mean).

Le Labo - Santal 26

New York was so much fun, as always. This morning I'm in recovery/survival mode. So tired and a 'to-do' list a mile long. First thing's first, I unpacked my new candle, Le Labo's Santal 26. Amazing. I had to pop into the Soho store after reading in this month's W magazine about how Le Labo is now making Santal 26 in an eau de parfum because of its popularity. I picked up the candle poured for just for us, 'The Lonergans' (they personalize it on the label for you) and had the best time enjoying all of their scents in their super cool old school 'lab'. I also fell in love with their mens scent Bergamote 22, next time I'm in the city, and before I do too much damage, I'm picking that up. The natural essences they use to mix their fragrances come directly from Grasse in France and although incredible, are not inexpensive!

Their Gaiac 10, which is only available in Japan, is temporarily available in New York to aid the tsunami relief efforts, 100% of the profits are donated. It was absolutely incredible too, but runs you about $400.

I would attempt to describe Santal's scent to you, but Le Labo feels that the message 'explaining kills art', (a sign recently spotted on a street in Chelsea), also applies to perfume. So I recommend experiencing it for yourself!

In other candle news, the LeSueur Interiors: 'Printemps' candle is en route right now and will be available to purchase as soon as next week. I'll have them at Urban Market on May 15 in Houston. It's the type of candle you can use in your kitchen, perfect for spring/summer. Pink grapefruit, jasmine and orange blossom, it's light, fresh and airy. I'm big on candles because they add so much to the atmosphere and 'feel' of your house..it's the easiest and cheapest way to totally spruce up your home!

Except I'm going to New York first first thing tomorrow morning. These hard as rock nails come in handy when you slam your finger in a trunk door, which is what happened to me today. If I would have known I would have chosen the nice 'navy blue'/'so black it's almost green' shade to match the now color of my pointer finger. In fact, I have no clue how I'm even typing right now. What Would Kate Wear? As in Kate Moss. Brilliant. I love that, my new mantra as I shop. I had a fun impromptu shopping trip with a good friend yesterday and got a few new spring pieces just in the nick to time to take to New York later this week.

I bought these shorts. They look exactly like these Olivia's got on. So cute.

This jacket. It's a little Chanel-esque. Fits like a glove. Cute with the shorts. Looks a lot better in person than with these gross-too-tight khaki pants.

These shoes are so sexy. I didn't get them, but I think I need to go back. I didn't get these either, but I think I need them too. I live in wedges in the summer.

So excited over this tote! It's pretty big, which is dangerous - that means it gets filled up and stays pretty messy...but worth it, great for trips.

Spring-ing Up Your House

I had no clue what to blog about today, (well, I could have blogged about my LIVE audition video yesterday with HGTV, but I'll save that for another day...I'm still a little hungover, I drank a half a bottle of wine to 'relax' before, and I am feeling guilty since I cheated badly, I gave up booze for Lent...) Anyway, I asked my sweet friend, we'll call her 'Tina', if she had any requests for a blog post today. Tina said that her house felt stale after Christmas, so much that she's still burning a Christmas candle! Oh no! We can't have that now can we?

Ok. Time to spring up your house. Here's what you need to do.

1. Change out your pillows. Put those same ones you've had on your sofa and bed for ages in the closet and try out something new for a change. Maybe set aside all those autumn-y colors and choose a completely different color or scheme this time. They don't have to be all the same or so matchy-matchy. They can be a lot of colors, Anthro's always mixing it up, see this bed in their shop!

This is Tina's new spring bed, inspired by Anthropologie! SO cheerful and fun right? Yea, I know, Tina's really smart and she reads 'Freakonomoics' in her spare time, I have design mags all over my bed and no books, I should take this little spring time suggestion from her and start reading actual books.

2. Go buy some plants. Indoor plants, flowers in pots. I just bought a huge fig tree that I'm LOVING. I copied my client after I put one in her house! Maidenhair ferns are sweet, succulents, orchids etc; put these plants in your bathroom, in your laundry room, in unexpected places that will make you feel happy when you see them. These little $3 succulents from Ikea have been thriving on my kitchen windowsill for a long time.

3. Start washing you bed linens and towels in this stuff. Heavenly. Available at Walgreens, or online here. It's doing little things like this that improve the quality of your life! Also, always buy cage free organic eggs. That doesn't really relate, it's just a reminder.

Go now and spring-up your house!

Ready to see some Round Top casualties? I promised I'd share. These are my junk buy... 1950's chair and sofa for my deck. My partner-in-crime spotted them!I had the Dubai ladies over (my mother-in-law and her long time friends from living in Dubai were all here for the week having fun), and they just about fell out when I took them outside to admire our new outdoor furniture. One of them laughed and asked me if I was sure I didn't get it out of her 'give away' pile when she was moving back here from the middle east! I think one of them said she had the exact same set when she lived in Bahrain in the early 80's. I think they thought I was absolutely CRAZY for spending money on this junk! Oh lawd! I'm going to attempt to scrub the mold and dirt off of the frames, if they don't return back to their beautiful bamboo glory then I am pretty sure I'll paint them black. I'm thinking I'll do simple upholstery, maybe contrast piped in black, with fun fun cushions. There is lots of lounging to be had over here at Chez Lonergan! And now, if I can get my act together and find a table (the concrete one I had quoted is a little out of budget, I'm going to save that one for when I have a pool for it to by!), Tim and I can start the tennis club we've been wanting to start for the past two years! (Remember we have Wimbledon in our back yard) We practiced on Sunday night, Tim said I have a 'mean backhand', watch out!

How great is this sofa? I'm trying to convince a client of mine to get it for her bedroom. It's 1850's and has the best scale, the back is 45''h and it's only 50''wide! So unusual. I love it.

Showhouse Showdown - HGTV

I just applied to be on HGTV. Am I crazy or what? I don't even HAVE a TV, how can I expect to be ON TV? I've never even really watched anything on HGTV, I'm more of a Bravo kinda girl. My friend Mo (Mo is my friend that if I had a 'guest blogger', she would be it, she's always discovering the best stuff!) in Denver thought it was a great idea for me to apply, so I did to humor her! Anyway, the premise of the show is this:

"Based on the Irish format by the same name, Showhouse Showdown is a competition between two professional interior designers who take over two newly-built and identical homes or town homes with identical budgets to create a winning interior design. At the end of each episode one designer is voted the winner by members of the public who represent the developer’s target market. "

Sounds fun right? Maybe I should try to down load some of these Irish versions and see what they're doing up in the UK! I just hope they give out a reasonable budget and not like, 'see what you can do to a 3 story town house with $5,000'. Basically nothing. I can deal with some DIY, but you know I'm not really a total DIY person. I believe in supporting and hiring the right skilled people to help you create things along the way. But having said that, I can definitely thrift and scrounge and mix some high and low and make some cheap stuff look expensive. If I got selected, I would probably push the boundaries and limits and take some risks since it's for fun and I'd make full use of this opportunity to inspire others to step out of their beige walled box. People tend to over think design and take it too seriously.

So who knows what will happen. I have no expectations, it was just a fun little exercise and a good way to waste a few hours this morning! And I also started to fantasize about having my own hair stylist. Like Rachel Zoe. That wouldn't be too bad. Tim said, "If you get it do WE get to be on Letterman?". Notice that pronoun. I mean, really Tim? Letterman? We are obviously very out of the TV loop. Would y'all laugh at me if I was on TV? I'd laugh at myself for sure, I would have a hard time keeping a straight face! Do you think they'd let me take an international shopping trip to furnish the town home? Maybe that could be one of my requests, only if we get to shop a Marrakesh market could I possibly design this town home! Kinda like this guy. Maybe HGTV could make a show for me doing what Keith does. That I could handle. Anyway, I'll keep you posted, I need to actually start doing some work today. ;) Have a fun weekend y'all!

I need some rest and relaxation this weekend. We only have one plan, Tim is taking me to pick out a bike for my birthday present! I'm so excited to get a big basket on it and to be able to cruise around my neighborhood! Now that Revival opened up two days ago on Heights Blvd, I'll be cruising there morning and night for flat whites, organic meats, locally farmed eggs/milk/dairy, produce grown right here in Texas and homemade breads! Yes, you read that correctly. FLAT WHITES. I am so so so excited to see a flat white offered on a cafe menu for the first time ever outside of NZ and Australia! Whohooo! I am just so excited about this little market, you have no idea! Our neighborhood was in dire need of something like this (actually, all neighborhoods are in dire need of places like this) and I know it will be a huge hit. I am consciously making an effort to practice a more European style lifestyle. You know, only picking up a few necessary fresh ingredients for dinner each night, and nothing more and nothing processed! Sustainable. Local. Organic. Bye bye Kroger and HEB. Yay for Revival! And rest and relaxation. And bikes. Who wants to meet me for a flat white in the morning? I tested the coffee today and it was superb!

My latest little mission is that I want to get an outdoor concrete table made for our deck, and I want a huge succulent garden to be on the center of the table. I just picked up 8 of these chairs in the sky blue that will go around the table.

Color Blocking

I just drove all over town to find this dress in a size too big. Yes, I am having a TARGET dress altered. To be fair, it is Thakoon for Target. But still, a little insane. I had to. I LOVE it. I know. I'm crazy. And a time waster. But I'm so into color blocking right now. And when I saw this, it made my heart beat faster. I know there was a 'gasp' when I sold my dumpster chairs. But I'm now changing things up in my house and doing more layers of blocked color. Solid chairs, solid sofa, solid drapes, bolder color. I'm going for it and I'm encouraging clients to do the same! What are you into these days?

Wanna hear a good love story? Of course you do!

Back in the early 90's two little cajun girls became best buddies in Mrs. Allain's Third Grade Class at Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School in Lafayette, Louisiana. These two buddies remained very close friends throughout different cities, countries, high schools and colleges...they can always pick up right where they left off. To this day they have early morning phone calls on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

That's me! Mary LeSueur. That's my buddy, Courtney! When Tim and I went traveling around the world, we stopped in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. We met a very cute, funny, outgoing Australian boy named Justin. This particular wild, hilarious Aussie told us his dream in life was to move to Texas, marry a southern belle and vote republican for the rest of his life! (You can read about our trip here, we met Justin in the jungle bar watching the game!) We became immediate friends with this chap and let him in on a little secret, that we happened to know his future wife.

Fast forward exactly one year later. Justin came to the US for a holiday and made a stop to visit us in Houston. After a lot of pressure from her friend, Courtney took a leap of faith and flew into Houston on a Wednesday night from Nola to meet this boy on a blind date. This photo was taken about 2 hours after they met, we knew they had hit it off. When Justin first went to the bathroom at dinner we got to ask Courtney what she thought, she said she couldn't understand a word Justin was saying, but she thought he was really cute. When Courtney ran off to the ladies (we drank a lot of bubbles and wine that night) we asked Justin what he was thinking. He said that she was gorgeous but he hadn't a clue on earth what she was talking about. Those accents have had us laughing ever since.

Fast forward about 15 months after that first date. Justin flew in to New Orleans (he made it after a few obstacles...one being he was in Japan during the earthquake) surprised Courtney and proposed!! Justin had organized for her family and close friends to all be at Galatoires when they walked in for a celebratory drink! Surprise!! We celebrated all night, it was such a fun, special occasion.

Justin, in that deep Aussie accent, toasted the entire restaurant to his beautiful fiance!

Tim calls this match we made, our greatest achievement! We love them so much and could not be happier for them! Congrats Courtney & Justin! I hope we remain best buddies with y'all until we're all in nursing homes together :) Who would have thought as two 8 year old little girls playing on the play ground that we would both marry boys from down under....

I'm back. It was a whirlwind trip. I'm tired. We really celebrated a lot. And lived up kiwi summertime. Now I have a gazillion 'to-do's'. And really hardly did a thing yesterday, (it was my birthday so I'm allowed a little break right?) I ate too many cupcakes and Tim took me to a show, it was fun fun. Miss Mendi dropped off dinner and a very nice bottle of NZ sav. Now, back to the grind. Travel is so good for the heart and soul, I'm missing New Zealand, Tim's family and dear friends so much already. I always have a hard time adjusting back to life after an international voyage. Are you ready for something yummy? Check out my new friend Leslie's pad up in Dallas. It was just featured in this month's FDLuxe. Her shop is a treasure chest, I don't even want to blog about it because it's such a good source! She's got insane taste and is the sweetest thing out. We missed each other here in Houston yesterday because I've been so crazy busy, but I'm counting the days till I can hop up to the big D again to hang and talk furniture with her!

Remember my dumpster chairs? They have moved homes this week. I grew up moving. I know what it's like. Change is good, people can adapt to change well, better than you think. You learn and grow when you experience change. Which is why I'm not going to get all hung up and emotional about letting these chairs go, although Sally said I looked like I was about to cry right after the lady said, "I'll take 'em." I honestly didn't expect anyone to buy them. But I'm glad someone else was as fond of them as I was. Furniture likes change too, I'm sure these dumpster chairs are so sick of me bloggin' about them. Anyway, moral of the story, a lovely lawyer is getting some pretty cool new office chairs, and some super cool lucite nesting tables to go in between.

So, after this weekend I have some big holes in my living room. Sure enough, not even 24 hrs after our sale ended, my girl Sally was hittin' the shops again. She sent me pics of these. I nabbed em up. I'm thinking purple. Or chartreuse plaid. Or something wild. Let the fun begin, again!

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday to shop at Urban Market! It was so much fun and I loved meeting other bloggers, designers, blog readers and making new friends! Can you believe this is my only (bad) photo from the whole thing? I had my good camera sitting in the front seat of my car the whole time. I don't even have photos my zebra ottoman, dumpster chairs, Amanda Talley pillows or pineapple lamps in that photo? All amazing things that sold...and went to great homes. I'll work on coaxing Sally and Annsley to do it again in May...a whole weekend of this, packing up, delivering, setting up, selling, packing up, coming home, is exhausting! Thanks again friends! URBAN MARKET

Mark your calendars! This Saturday afternoon and ALL DAY Sunday is the Houston Urban Market. On Sunday it's $5 to get in, it will be 68 degrees and sunny. We're all craving that weather around these parts! It will be a lovely day to peruse around and shop for furniture/accessories/art and nab some of the best pimento cheese the south has to offer!

I'm sharing a booth with two of the most stylish ladies in this town! Sally Wheat and Annsley Popov are my booth buddies and we have some really fabulous things from python pillows to New Orleans artist Amanda Talley's new fabrics made into pillows and stretched into wall art!! I also have antlers up the wazzu and some insane Madeline Weinrib-esque rugs, oh AND will be selling my candles, big and small! Come early because things sell fast. Can't wait to see y'all!

. simple drapes

. no more shiny counter tops - HONE people! Concrete is COOL.

. layer your rugs

. simplify your paint schedule, make it all tonal, none of this each room is an entirely different color that doesn't even flow from one room to the next business.

. get over scaled lighting

. ethnic up your fabrics

Oh Hi There!

I've been a little tied up lately. I've been finishing projects, working in the middle of projects and just starting some fun projects. And making draperies. Well, facilitating the making of draperies. And getting all my things together for a booth at Urban Market. And going to amazing jewelry trunk show with friends. And watching every Jane Austin movie known to man. And scoring great pairs of Giuesspe Zanotti's at DSW...finds of the century. That's what's been happening. What have you been up to? These pictures make me smile...

Go ahead Anthro with ya bad self! Loving all this Ikat. A little trend that looks like is here to stay. I like it, a lot. I have some great colorful Ikat pillows coming in from Bali for Urban Market. They aren't expensive, and have down fills instead of gross poly ones. I love an easy 'pick me up' in a room by throwing on a few new and different pillows on your sofa. And I love all this color. Have courage people, use color in your house!

Navajo and peeps I like

I keep touching on Navajo. NO likes some nav too.

I scored this little guy a couple of weeks ago. I am going to have it at Urban Market, but if it doesn't sell I'll gladly welcome it into our little house. I'll save it for a future daughter's room. It's so M.W. - preppy/ethnic/modern/awesome. My little rug is going for a lot lot lot less than what Madeline's getting for some of hers up in the big apple at mecca abc. I would love to see it at the end of a little girls bed, as an upholstered top on a super cool bench, in a little hallway or kitchen on the floor. Possibilities are endless.

More on this Navajo trend, the other day I was at Matt Camron visiting with my buddy Bobak, and he showed me these awesome new custom Navajo Dhurries. I was obsessed! They look amazing in person. You can custom design your size/colors/pattern. Amazing. My friend Sarah writes the Matt Camron blog..check it out!

Just a couple of thoughts.

How are we already at the end of January? Time sweeps by.

It's crazy how the simplicity of white is so perfect. White tulips are perfect. I love how there is always that tulip in the bunch flopping in its own direction.

These colors make my heart skip beats. They are exciting. I wouldn't even be able to choose a favorite. Can you?

So many choices we have in life. Even picking a color can be challenging. Always trying to make the right decision can be exhausting.

There is a sweet doggy going to heaven today. Prayers needed for a little bull terrier named Bailey and her family. Thanks.

I'm also ending this month by running a half marathon with my mother-in-law. She's been training for months. She's running and training to help the homeless. I think that is amazing. Absolutely awesome. Can you imagine living without a home? I can't. If you're interested, click here to donate a little to help those without a place to sleep find one.

Dallas Round Up - Again & Again

Miss Mendi and I had a great time in Dallas last week. Here's the scoop. I'm not going to post a bunch of the products I saw at market only because they aren't as exciting as the things I found at Again and Again. Except I love this little bucket. This was our fave. It's like a total Gucci/Hermes knock off, something super chic to house toys, trash, logs, whatever. Oh one side note, if you're in the big D...eat dinner at Park, (the chic bar in the back had live jazz when we were there) and have a meat ball sub at Jimmy's. Both recommendations from the owner of Again and Again, sweet Leslie Pritchard. We tested both and loved them!Again and Again has three locations. We went to them twice in the two days we were there. I was obsessed. Sweet Emily of Material Girls gave me the heads up on Again, thank you Emily!! Anyway, Leslie has some awesome, awesome things, for great prices. I would be in serious trouble if there was a Houston location. She's working on getting some of her pieces online, I'll let you know when she has it up and running because I know her site will be better than ebay. You have to have an imagination with her things, some need some sprucing, some are off-the-wall, just the way I like it, she has that unexpected thing every home needs. Her look is the total mix, high/low, midcentury/antique, painted/not painted etc. She told me she loves to 'save furniture'. I just melted over that. I like to save furniture too.

This guy came home with me in the back of my car. So did an old beat up awesome Persian rug, I'll post a photo of that once it's been cleaned, it's too dirty to even put on my floor right now! Back to this chair, what do you think? I'm over-the-moon, in love with it. At first I thought I'd put it in my booth at Urban Market (which is Feb 13 by the way, mark your calendars). Now I'm not sure I can part with the original and might have my upholster make a re-production to sell. I'm thinking I want to keep it for my bedroom and re-upholster it in either an old worn looking tobacco leather, OR a dark blue velvet or mohair. The lines are crazy wild, and most importantly, original. This chair came out of a Chicago estate, the original owner's son sold it to Leslie, it has the original upholstery tag on the seat...it's old, 1890's - 1910's old. And the scale is phenomenal. I should have taken a picture of me sitting in it, that back is HUGE. Scale is so important. I've seen some chairs remade like this, in similar fashion, but the scale of the wings are all off compared to the depth/legs/arms etc. This one is just right. What should I do? Take it to Urban Market or not? Eek.. help! One more note about this chair, one of my most favorite things about it, is that exposed wooden curved frame along the back. Do you know how hard that is to make? Making a repro will not be cheap. Ok..enough about my obsession with this crazy chair.

Moose antlers? REAL moose antlers? YES! These are so bad ass. I have Elk antlers going in my Urban Market booth that are pretty bad ass too.

Navajo is IN right now. I think it's becoming the new ikat. I loved this bench. I have a sweet little preppy looking Navajo rug for my booth too.

Ice ice baby chandeliers from France. So chic.

Great little side tables, they need a little TLC but that is easy!

Prettiest little lucite chair, PERFECT vanity chair, with a custom cushion and new brass casters.

The lines on this sofa. Holy moley. Look carelfully at the back cushions and arms. And the scale of this sofa. It was like 10 feet long. Leslie wants to upholster this in coral velvet. I'd probably drop the skirt and make exposed legs, but can you imagine? Miss Mendi and I sat here with her and chatted furniture, saving furniture, blogs, stores, style, Dallas, Houston, interior design, for TWO HOURS. She's so sweet!

I loved this classic Empire chest mixed with all of the other fun stuff. All about that mix. This piece would last for-evah, never out of style.

After chatting for two hours, Miss Mendi asked to use the ladies. We heard her squeal once she turned the light on. SURPRISE. A hot pink bathroom with brass fixtures. Totally gutsy, amazing. It's actually wallpapered. Even better.

I could think of a million ways to use that pair of mirrors. So gorgeous. I like pairs of things.

sorry i've been mia.

lots going on.

my girl jessica and i started a drapery workroom. today was day one. it's so awesome.

call me if you need custom drapes/bedding/soft furnishings/monogramming. we gotcha covered. our other girl, miss hilda, she's our sewing goddess and can make it all and is dying to get those machines running. jessica and i are dying to watch her in action and learn from her.

tim's singing in the shower right now and it's making me laugh out loud. he makes up songs, they aren't anything that plays on the radio. he's so funny.

speaking of tim, we watched the english patient this weekend, it was like the best stayathome date ever. highly recommend it.

i have some great stuff from dallas to show you, but i'm about to make some tea and hit the sack. tomorrow i'll fill you in.

but. for now. to end this monday night. watch this. it makes you think. there's a lot more going on on this earth than pillows, chairs, draperies, rugs and house plans.
